What? It’s testing time at Charleswood Karate already? Doesn’t that mean that summer’s nearly … oh, nevermind.

Getting Ready For Your Test
One of the precepts in the Dojo Kun that we recite after class is “Endeavor To Excel“. If you haven’t thought about where that fits into your training, here’s one of the many ways:
As a student progresses in training, each belt rank is meant to represent an increased amount of knowledge and skill, with each level designed to build upon the ones below it. As knowledge and skill grows, it should show up in the “beginner” kata and techniques as well.
Meaning, if you’re testing with Heian Godan, you’re expected to be practicing Heian Shodan through to Heian Yondan regularly, with a goal of improving each of them, and striving to excel to the best of your ability. Since we don’t cover all the kata in class, that means it’s up to you to practice outside of class, too, if you want to continue to progress quickly.
Kyu ranks are encouraged to ask senior belts for help with kata before and after class. Black and brown belts are encouraged to grab a junior belt and go through (more than just their testing) kata with them before & after class as well.
