On the weekend of March 24 & 25, 2012, Charleswood Karate is hosting a pair of Self Defense seminars at our facility, located in the west end of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
These seminars are open to both Charleswood Karate members as well as the general public, with a base requirement of 13 years of age.
The focus will be working on “common sense” basic self-defense including break-holds, strikes & avoiding situations, plus suggested exercises you can take home with you to reinforce what you’ve learned.

Read on for more information about these learning opportunities, and be sure to invite your friends and family, as no prior martial arts experience is required and this is solid stuff everyone should know!
Self Defense techniques taught in every day class as we work towards testings and tournaments are quite different from those taught for a real attack outside the relative safety of the dojo.
[singlepic id=376 w=220 float=left]Inside the dojo the interactions are quite controlled: There are instructors and rules, and everyone is there with the spirit and mindset for sport.
In a confrontation outside the dojo, the attacker intends to cause real harm to the opponent. There are no “illegal attacks” and often nobody there to intervene.
The focus of these Self Defense courses is on the development of personal-safety skills that can be easily mastered by anyone, whether or not they have any prior martial arts experience.
[singlepic id=374 w=320 h=240 float=right]These personal safety skills will be taught and practiced within a comfortable learning environment, and are designed and lead by experienced black belt instructors.
Bring your parents, bring your brothers and sisters, bring your kids. Heck, bring your cousins, aunts & uncles, and your grandparents, too!
Wear your casual sport clothes – loose-fitting, no zippers, big buttons, dangly bits, and no shoes.
See you (and your friends, families and coworkers) at the dojo!
[singlepic id=307 w=320 h=240 float=right]The event was held on February 25, 2012 at the Charleswood dojo, and while we got off to a late start due to “technical difficulties”, the rounds went quickly and smoothly. Results can be found on the IDSL page as linked above.
Thank you to the officials and timekeepers, and to the competitors as well. We had representation from not only Charleswood Karate, but Winnipeg Budokai, Victoria Karate Club, Fort Garry Shotokan, and Heijoshin Karate. And let’s not forget the competitors from Lac du Bonnet Karate who came in from outside of Winnipeg!
Before I go any further, I’d like to invite the NEW brown belts to keep an eye out for when the next IDSL event date is announced. We’d love to see some new faces coming out to have some fun, while meeting people who train at other Shotokan clubs around Winnipeg, and getting some low-pressure competition experience in as well. Sensei Phil said he expected the next event to be held early in April.
Be sure to become a fan of the IDSL page on Facebook if you hang around on there.
We’ve got a lot of video content from this event – 36 videos, in fact!
To make it easy, I’ve put all the videos in a big list, and broken it down into sections:
Hi, my name is Jill, and if you haven’t noticed me skulking around with a camera at the last few IKD seminars and IDSL events, you’ll probably begin to notice me now.
I started helping Charleswood with its Social Media content in December, livening up the blog, the Facebook page, and introducing a YouTube channel and Twitter profile as well.
All of this is to give members a number of ways to keep up with what is going on with the club, and also, it’s to spread the word about Charleswood Karate. You can help by sharing our videos and pictures and blog posts on YOUR blog, Facebook page, YouTube account, or on Twitter, and linking back to the club’s website.
And of course, if your friends or family have questions about karate, let them know they can train 2 classes for free to check it out some time!
[singlepic id=286 w=320 h=240 float=left]Karate is a sport that children as young as four can safely get involved with and benefit from.
Charleswood Karate is a place they can make new friends, learn the basics of Shotokan karate, and be encouraged to focus, be respectful to themselves and others, and participate with spirit.
Our “Young Tigers” program is designed for children aged 4-6, once a week for 10 weeks. Certificates for achievement are provided for discipline, strength, and karate skills.
Parents are welcome to watch, and the club provides a seating area to the side to make it comfortable!
The Young Tigers program for the spring session will start in April, right after the spring break, and progress for 10 classes.
Children can progress to the more advanced regular youth program designed for those 6-12 years of age after one or more sessions of Young Tigers.

There are currently two class times & dates to choose from:
