Spring is here!  (FINALLY!)

May Long weekend is coming up, and Charleswood Karate falls into “holiday mode”:

All classes (including Young Tigers) on the following days are cancelled:

Saturday, May 18
Sunday, May 19 (Matayoshi Kobudo)
Monday, May 20

• May 25:  Round #4 of IDSL 2013 is in Lac du Bonnet, carpool available from the dojo
• June 1:  Sensei Ron has reserved space at Westgrove School (50 Westgrove Way) in order to hold a special class, followed by testing for brown and below, and mock testings for Dan ranks.  Black belts needed to help instruct during the pre-testing class, email Sensei Ron to let him know you’ll be there.  Spectators also welcome!

Are You Planning To Test?

If you are testing for a colored belt, check with Sensei Ron to see if you’re ready to test.

If you’re a brown belt testing for a higher level, Sensei Ron has recently began to require you telling HIM what you need to do for your testing, instead of turning to him to decide if you’re ready.

Those looking to test for a Dan level over the next while are invited to participate in a “mock black belt testing” for their level.  Talk with Sensei Ron for more info.

Instructors and black belts of all ages are invited to assist during both the pre-testing class and during the testing itself.

Fun Competition For Shotokan Brown And Black Belts

With head-to-head kata matches and two-point rounds of freestyle kumite, the IDSL is an excellent way for brown and black belt students to challenge themselves and improve their skills.

Competitors from all Shotokan style dojos are invited, no matter who they are affilliated with.  So, if you have a friend who is brown belt or higher and trains Shotokan with another club, be sure to invite them to join!

Volunteers and spectators welcome! Come support the IDSL and Sensei Phil’s efforts to bring the community together in a fun way.

Sensei Phil Harris of Heijoshin Karate is pleased to let us know that Lac du Bonnet Karate Club will be the host dojo for the fourth IDSL event this year. Here’s the info:

If you haven’t already registered online for at least one prior event, please do so now.

Sensei Ron has recently announced that the May 4, 2013 class from 10-11 AM will be designated Games Day, open to all students 12 and under!

Keeping Karate Fun

Fun Exercises & Games with Sensei Ron Porath

Everyone at our club knows that Sensei Ron runs fun classes – especially in the 12 & under sessions!

Not only do students build their kicking, punching & blocking skills in a whole variety of “traditional karate” ways (kata, basics, partner work), but through the use of  obstacle courses, relay races, “Sensei says”, time-based games and other fun games as well!

On Saturday May 4 from 10 to 11 AM, Sensei Ron will be running a class for students 12 and under that has a very high focus on using games to challenge students, build skills and of course, let everyone burn off some energy with a good workout!

Adults who have experience running sport/game programs for children are invited to offer game suggestions to Sensei Ron.

Adults who train with their children are welcome to attend the class, although if it’s crowded the games will focus mainly on the kids!

Black belts of any age who are interested in helping Sensei Ron are also invited.

Seminar & Testing with Sensei Bryan Mattias

The spring IKD Seminar & Testing with Sensei Bryan Mattias, 7th Dan, and head of IKD Quebec, is upon us!

Because of the full karate schedule including the IKD Nationals competition in New Brunswick in May and the IKD World Camp in June, the spring seminar & testing date is a little earlier than it was last year.

This spring it’s an honor to welcome Sensei Bryan Mattias to Winnipeg, it’s his first time leading seminars here and with his many years of experience training, competing and teaching Shotokan karate, these sessions are bound to be mind-blowing!

By the way, Sensei Mattias is over 6’6″ so if you’re a tall karateka who has questions about how to use your height to your advantage in kumite, or are looking for speed tricks in difficult techniques, bring those questions along to these seminars!

About Sensei Bryan Mattias

Bryan Mattias has been teaching Shotokan karate since the rank of 2nd kyu (brown belt), in 1977.

In 1981, Bryan Mattias obtained the rank of ^1st Dan black belt in the presence of ^7th Dan Master Koyama (JKA) and also master Takashina ^7th Dan (JKA). Today, Mattias Sensei holds the rank of ^7th Dan (IKD), is also Regional Director for AKJQ, vice-president of the IKD and holds the ranks of international referee, instructor and examiner.  

Over the years, Sensei Mattias has trained up more than 100 black belts from eleven to sixty-five years, with some reaching multi-dan levels up to 7th Dan themselves.

Because Shotokan Karate is a traditional Japanese style, etiquette, discipline and respect are required. Each karateka seeks to apply the Dojo Kun in his daily life. According to Sensei Mattias, to hit with fist or foot is superficial when seeking self-control. The advantage of a club where this philosophy is taught is that a simple karate school is a school of life and manners.

Even if you train and encourage people to compete and examine for higher ranks, the goal is not the acquisition of medals and belts but surpassing oneself. In this way everyone wins.
