History and Location

Charleswood Karate Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba

Charleswood Karate started at the Westdale Community Centre in 1993 under Sensei Ron Porath. There were only 3 classes offered per week compared to the 17+ classes a week that are offered now at the current location. The Westdale Community Centre had difficulty providing times, and when class times became limited, alternate options had to be found.

In 1998 Sensei Ron decided to find a another location. Wanting to continue to support the existing students, a location was found that was still within the Charleswood community, and that was less than 2 km from the Westdale Community Centre. In 1999 the new dojo was built with contribution from many of its members. Since that time, the dojo is proud to have hosted JKA instructors Sensei Yutaka Yaguchi,Sensei Masataka Mori and Sensei Shigeru Takashina.
